ARTIST STATEMENT:
I’ve tried most media with every kind of subject matter, and for most of my painting life, I have returned to traditional landscape painting in watercolor. More recently I find myself drawn to doing larger paintings in acrylic and oil paint as well.
Although we've traveled extensively throughout America and Europe, I'm always drawn back to that which I know best; the woodlands of the Northeast. For the last ten or fifteen years, the Delaware and Lehigh Rivers have captured my attention. That includes the streams, waterfalls and surrounding woodlands. I love the feel of this area, and think about what it might have been before it all changed.
Quiet moments in time that are felt and experienced are what I seek, and what leads me on; an old custom, ever new! In my painting, I've tried to capture particular moments and the feelings that are evoked. I'd like viewers to sense these same feelings.
I really enjoy what I am doing right now, and since my work is constantly evolving, I keep looking ahead.
Mostly, I work in my studio now. For a great deal of my life, I taught drawing, painting and art appreciation at Seton Hall Prep School, and Seton Hall University, as well as the Montclair Art Museum. The students, with their interest and love of art, have always added a dimension to my own work. They inspired me as much as I hope I inspired them. We still teach workshops and that is always fun. The workshops have gone on for more than 30 years. Wow!
None of this would have happened without Judy.
